Alastair Strachan is an artist and teacher based in Glasgow with a degree in drawing and painting from Edinburgh College of Art. He is a founder-member of Transmission Gallery and a Diplomate of Paisley Art Institute. He has served on numerous committees including Transmission, Wasps Studios, Paisley Art Institute and the Royal Glasgow Institute. He has lectured at numerous colleges and universities including Glasgow Kelvin College, NSCAD University, Nova Scotia, Glasgow School of Art and Marist College, New York. Alastair Strachan’s practice has always been rooted in observation of the world around him. Wherever he is based at any time becomes the subject matter of his work. After years of teaching art and creative process, he is comfortable with the ambiguity of not knowing where the work is heading and confident problems and resulting solutions, of some sort, will always be found. The search is very much part of the journey. He has won many awards and has work in numerous collections at home and abroad. Painting from Life, shown here at Dorchester Avenue, is an ongoing series of works developed from weekly life drawing sessions. Mostly small in scale, they evolve from direct observation but, through the painting process, begin to inhabit their own space, often undergoing radical change from the original source.
